John Searle
- The work on speech acts was extend by John
Searle on his "Speech Acts" (1969) book.
- He attempted to classify speech acts into five
classes.
- Representatives- commit the speaker to the truth of
an expressed proposition. (informing)
- Directives- attempts on the part of the speaker to
get the hearer to do something (request).
- Commissives- commit the speaker to a course of
action (promise).
- Expressives- express some psychological state
(thanking).
- Declarations- effect some changes in an
institutional state of affairs. (declare marriage).
